Study Abroad Programs
We encourage you to spend some time studying abroad and exploring different cultures. Within our department, there are three study abroad programs: a summer program in Florence, Italy, a summer program in Paris, France, and a semester-long program in Angers, France. We also offer a variety of scholarships and financial aid options to help cover some of the cost.

Université Catholique de l'Ouest
Spend the semester in Angers, France studying French language and civilization.
Language Institute in Paris
As one of the USA’s oldest continuously offered academic summer programs (since 1958), the Summer Language Institute in France enables students to experience the cultural offerings of both the French capital and the regions of Normandy, Brittany, and the Loire Valley while completing intensive coursework in French language, history and civilization.
Language and Culture in Perugia
Participants may choose between two program tracks: Language or Language + Cooking Track. Both provide rigorous academics, and the Language + Cooking track includes hands-on culinary experiences. Both tracks include guided excursions to iconic destinations such as Assisi and Florence, and complete cultural immersion. Living in shared apartments in the heart of Perugia, students will practice Italian every day in cafés, markets, and historic piazzas while discovering one of Italy's most authentic and welcoming university cities. Open to KU and non-KU students, this faculty-led program offers an unforgettable opportunity to develop language proficiency, deepen cultural understanding, and experience a part of Italy many tourists do not.
The Department of French, Francophone & Italian Studies is pleased to announce the following opportunities for study-abroad scholarships. All scholarships have the following deadlines:
- Apply by October 1st for programs beginning in the Spring, no later than 11:59pm.
- Apply by March 1st for programs beginning in the Summer and in the Fall, no later than 11:59pm.

The KU FFIT Study Abroad Scholarships
The KU FFIT Study Abroad Scholarships are open to KU degree-seeking undergraduate students who have applied to an academic year, semester or summer study abroad program in a French or Italian speaking country where the program target language is French or Italian. The Department of French, Francophone & Italian Studies has a limited number of scholarships that are awarded in the fall and in the spring. (Scholarship deadlines mirror deadlines for applying for study abroad.) Scholarship amounts vary from year to year, but in general, for students doing a summer program, scholarships typically range from $1,000 to $2,000. For students doing a semester program, scholarships typically range between $3,000 and $5,000, and for students spending a year abroad, the department is typically able to offer one $10,000 scholarship per year.
The David A. Dinneen Study in France Scholarship
The department will be awarding $2,000 to a meritorious student participating in the Paris Summer Language Institute this year and $3,000 to a meritorious student studying abroad in France next fall. Please note that no separate application is necessary. Students applying for a FFIT Study Abroad Scholarship will automatically be considered for the David A. Dinneen Fund.
Office of Study Abroad and Global Engagement Scholarships
The Office of Study Abroad and Global Engagement also offers two scholarships for students interested in studying an researching in France and French-speaking countries.
